Relationships

Ash has made many friends along the course of his journey, especially since he is very sociable and easily makes friends with other people.

Delia- Ash's mother has raised him all by herself his whole life, due to the absence of a father. She is somewhat air-headed, a personality trait Ash himself has picked up, and is very cheerful and positive. She greatly supports her son on his journey and even makes clothes for him to wear on his journey. She used to come to his league matches in Kanto and Johto to cheer for him.

Professor Oak- He gave Ash his first Pokémon, Pikachu, when it was time for Ash to begin his journey. The Professor acts as a mentor to Ash and gives him advice as he goes along his journey. Ash calls him up on a frequent basis, probably even more than his own mother especially since we rarely ever see her on the phone but we see Oak all the time, and he obviously looks up to him very much. Oak also spends a lot of time with Ash's mother, which can seem a little suspect. Ash once met Professor Oak as a young boy after a time travelling incident, although he didn't realise it was Oak himself. The two of them got along very well, even to the point where they had their arms around each other while sitting in a tree.

Gary- Ash and Gary are childhood friends who grew up in Pallet Town together. When they were little, they did things like going to the cinema together. As they got older though and both wanted to be Pokémon Masters, they didn't get along quite so well anymore, knowing each other was a potential rival. At one point before their journeys started, they broke a Poké Ball while fishing and carried around the separate pieces. Gary was quite rude to Ash and often mocked him, which annoyed Ash, but he still did care about Gary, as he freaked out when he saw Gary lying there in the Viridian Gym. Gary eventually became nicer to Ash and the two of them became more like proper friends than rivals, especially when Gary decided he no longer wished to be a Pokémon Master and set off to become a Pokémon Researcher instead.

Misty- She was the first person Ash met when he started his journey. At first, they bickered a lot and Misty claimed she was following him for the bike, which Pikachu had destroyed. Despite their differences, they did get along usually and did care about each other. It was quite clear Misty wasn't just following him for the bike. Misty was greatly supportive of Ash, cheering up for him in matches. She would also get jealous if other girls showed affection for Ash, but never did tell Ash her feelings. It was unlikely that Ash would return them, naive as he could be.

Brock- He serves as the calm voice of reason in the group, though he's anything but calm when he sees a woman and his personality will rapidly change, and is like a big brother to Ash. Like Misty, Brock greatly supports Ash during his matches. Brock also takes care of Ash and whoever else is with them, cooking for the group and making sure they aren't getting lost.

Tracey- There isn't much to say about the relationship between Ash and Tracey, other than that of course they do get along. Tracey was travelling with Ash during the Orange Islands because he wished to return to Pallet Town to meet his idol Professor Oak. He then stayed there and Ash gets to see him whenever he returns home.

May- May started off as a young and inexperienced girl who had no idea what she was doing, and only wished to travel, until she decided to become a Pokémon co-ordinator. She was much more forgiving than Misty when it came to the matter of Pikachu destroying her bike. Ash immediately adopted the role of mentor and guided May in the right direction, giving her advice when the time called for it. Occasionally, they would bicker but it never escalated to the heights that it did with Ash and Misty. May was inspired by Ash's battling style and even adopted it to use in her contests, though it later came back to bite her in the Kanto Grand Festival.

Max- When Max wasn't making fun of Ash for losing in the Johto League, he actually looked up to him although it was clear he admired his father even more. When Ash beat Norman, Max was so upset that he took the badge and locked himself in the greenhouse, though he later came out and apologised. Max can have his bratty moments, but he's actually a rather nice kid and is quite intelligent as well. It's clear Max has become really attached to Ash at the end of AG, as he is upset about the idea of going back home, but cheers up when Ash promises him a battle in the future.

Dawn- Unlike May, she already knew what she was doing and didn't need Ash to be a mentor. She also practically forgot about the fact Pikachu destroyed her bike, only bringing it up on the Cycling Road. The two of them have rather similar personalities and they get along just fine, though they argued once or twice in early DP. They support each other when it come to gyms or contests and even borrow from each other when it comes to battle style. Dawn used to put on a cheerleading outfit and cheer for Ash in the gyms, which she doesn't really do anymore.

Paul- He is Ash's rival in Sinnoh, and likes to have Pokémon he considers to be strong, and will release Pokémon who he thinks are weak which greatly annoys Ash. Paul is always putting Ash down and insulting him, and Ash has yet to win a battle against him, which is quite a sore point. Ash has tried to befriend Paul in the past, but Paul has either ignored or just insulted him right back.

Team Rocket- Ash isn't too fond of Jessie, James and Meowth, especially since they are always trying to steal his Pikachu as well as other Pokémon. However, they have worked together on occasion when they can put their differences aside. Ash was nice enough to let Jessie borrow his Aipom for the contest at one time. He also let James and Meowth work with him when helping out an Electrike, and assisted James when dealing with Jessie and Meowth, who were attempting to rob James's caretakers of their Pokémon. Team Rocket will sometimes root for Ash in battle, though it's a rare occasion and usually just because they want Pikachu to win.
