Name

What does the name Ash mean? Well, it can either refer to the tree or the residue of fire. However, neither of these have very much to do with Ash at all.

The meaning of his last name on the other hand is very obvious. Ketchum is clearly a pun on "Gotta Catch 'Em All", which used to be the Pokémon motto until Nintendo dropped it.

His Japanese name, Satoshi, came from the creator of Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri. The name "Satoshi" means wisdom. I wouldn't really call him intelligent though, with his poor memory and the fact he knew next to nothing about Pokémon in the beginning despite the fact he was going to be a Pokémon trainer. Though, I suppose you could say he does gain some wisdom as his journey progresses... =/ And he doesn't seem to be quite as dumb as he used to be.

The name Ash could have been come up with using some of the letters from Satoshi. It's a possibility.

His French name is Sacha, which is similar to Ash. It's the French form of Sasha... and I honestly think the name is a bit too feminine for him. But it is used for males too, apparently.

Here's the Kabalarians analysis of the name Ash:

  • Your first name of Ash creates individuality, independence, self-confidence, initiative, and an inclination to physical activity.

  • You are not inclined to merge your opinions and viewpoints with others, to accept compromise, or to work in a subservient position against your will.

  • Your expression is invariably quite direct and candid.

  • Others find it difficult to accept your domineering and, at times, argumentative manner.

  • The name Ash creates the urge to be creative and original, we emphasize that it causes a blunt expression that alienates others.

  • This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses through tension or accidents to the head.
